Hacks and Ways to Reduce Waste at Home Part 2

Glad to see you back on our blog!

This is Part 2 of Hacks and Ways to Reduce Waste at Home. Check out Part 1 here ^^

Baby Lotion Bottles Cell Phone Charging Stations

Baby lotion bottles often end up in the trash when they are empty. After all, what can we do with all those empty bottles?

We can make a very handy cell phone charging station that prevents our wires from hanging on the outside. With a little bit of fabric, some clipping, and a little time, we can create this really handy charging station for our phone and put the phone and the cable right next to the plug-in, which saves space, and ensures that the cable doesn't drop on the floor.

Broken Crayons Candle

Empty jars, vases, and some broken crayons are usually thrown into the trash, but we can combine them to create colorful candles.

Melt the crayons and pour them into the jar, color by color. By doing this, we can make a rustic candle out of an old jar, or use any glass jar we are going to throw away.

If we want to put them in one basket, it would be a very clean gift and it takes very little time to make, making it the perfect last-minute gift.

Broken Guitar Shelf

If we have a guitar that simply cannot be tuned anymore, or is broken in some way, we can turn it into a really neat shelf. First, we will need to remove the front of the guitar (hopefully without adding further damage to the back and neck of the guitar).

Then, simply add shelves inside. Hang it on the wall of a music lover’s room or put it in the living room for everyone to enjoy. It is a good place to store CDs and other music supplies, or we can use it as a bookshelf for sheet music.

Storage from Torn Books

If we have an old book that has been torn up, our first thought would be to throw or recycle the book. That is why this is a great idea as we can repurpose the torn or old book and turn it into storage.

All we have to do is remove the pages of the book by hand, penknives, or scissors. The goal is to leave the spine of the book in good condition so that when we put them on our bookshelves, they look presentable and untouched.

We can use them to safely store things out of sight, and they are really easy to make. We can do one at a time or create a small corner with several book covers. It is a great decorating tool and it is environmentally friendly as well!

Stuffed Animals from Gloves

If our gloves lasted for only one season before they tear, we can turn them into cute stuffed animals and make them last a little longer. It is a great project to start Christmas because these little cuties make great presents for all the kids on our list.

It's also a good project to carry out if we find that our gloves lose their fingertips. All we have to do is a little hand sewing, but the project is really easy when looking at the overall picture.

Plastic Bottle Gift Box

Wrapping paper is not easy to recycle because it is thin and full of ink. Besides that, we are wasting money when we buy wrapping paper because many people will throw it away after they open their gift.

Using recycled items such as plastic bottles to make a gift box is a better choice. It is better to use Coca-Cola brand bottles because the shape works better.  This little gift box not only can be used to wrap gifts but also can be used for storing things such as accessories or sewing kits. We can also keep things inside this box when we travel.

Recycling Bottles Jewelry Stand

Nowadays, people like to buy jewelry to match their outfits. However, sometimes we cannot find the jewelry when we are rushing because we did not keep it properly. Therefore, it is easier to have a jewelry stand to keep the jewelry together.

It is a good choice to make a jewelry stand by using recycling bottles because it costs less. Although we need to buy a threaded rod,  screw nuts, and washers, it still costs less than buying a jewelry stand. This recycling bottle jewelry stand can be used to keep jewelry, keys, or other little items.

Recycled Clothes Throw Pillow

Everyone, especially girls, likes to buy new clothes, but there are no extra places to keep new clothes if we do not throw some of the clothes away.  We can use the clothes we want to dispose of to make a pillow cover.

Many people like to buy pillow covers as a decoration for the house during festivities, but it is expensive and some people tend to change it quite frequently. We can use clothes that have beautiful designs as pillow covers as it costs less and can make the house cosier.

No-Sew T-Shirt Tote Bag

Clothes can not only be used as pillow covers, but we can also use old T-Shirts to make a bag. This bag is easy to make because it does not require sewing.  All we need to do is to cut the sleeve and the neckline area. Then, we can cut fringes at the bottom of the shirt and tie it to seal it so it can act as the base of the bag. There are only five steps to create this bag.

This bag is easy to carry around and is washable. We can use it to carry things when we go shopping and to replace plastic bags because plastic bags are not recyclable and will harm the environment.

Baking Tray Magnet Board

Some people may have an oven in the house. However, they lack the time or are too busy to bake something. So, they want to throw away or give away the oven to someone else that may use it more frequently.

There is a baking tray in the oven. We can take out the baking tray and use it as a magnetic board. Parents can use this as a teaching tool to teach children or use this as a toy for the children. Besides that, we can also use this as a memo board.

Reusable Fabric Folder

After opening out the cereal from the cereal box, don’t throw away the cereal box! It can be the perfect base for a reusable fabric folder and after gluing your favourite fabrics on it, it will become a beautiful stationery case.  Get organized in style, you all!

Hair Pin

Don’t throw away unused cardboard and buttons from old clothes! We can use these unused materials to make our own customised hairpins. We can make it into whatever shape we like. This is a great way to reuse scraps from other projects on this list. You can make a cute little heart-shaped hair clip!

Organize Embroidery Floss

Pizza boxes, cereal boxes, and other cardboard food containers should not be thrown away. They are just right for cutting down into embroidery floss spools. We can organize our embroidery floss according to their colours. No more messy and tangled floss for us!

Bird Feeder

There are so many useful ways to recycle old plastic bottles, but so little time to actually carry out these activities! Turn any plastic bottle into a bird feeder by cutting several holes in the bottle to stick a wooden spool through so birds can land and feed on your feeder. Next, add bird feed into the top of the plastic bottle, then cover the top with the bottle cap. Lastly, add twine to the top of the bottle cap and hang it where you get the most bird traffic in your yard!

Old Wine Bottle Lights/Painted Vase

Turn your old wine bottles into beautiful light-up décor by adding plain or colored holiday lights into them. Another idea for your empty wine bottles is to paint the bottle in any desired way and use the bottle as a vase for all of your seasonal flowers or plants. Think about creating something for each holiday and/or gifting the decorated wine bottle for those hard-to-shop-for individuals.
